The Green Search
Report from the news desk at Ars Technica today of a new green search site just launched by an independent nonprofit outfit based in Wittenberg, Germany.
Forestle.org uses advertising revenue “to protect endangered rainforest regions in order to keep our worlds most precious ecosystems intact and fight global warming.”
All funds minus the 5% that go toward administration costs are donated to the Nature Conservancy’s Adopt an Acre, a program that began in 1991 and so far has raised $22 million to protect 600 000 acres in various places around the world.
The search results are delivered through Google with Google Image Search and Google Maps also available, however, Forestle is not integrated with all of Googles other services so email, calendar and iGoogle links are not available.
I guess it’s easy to be dubious about the various environmentally friendly or charitable things you can do in a virtual environment, particularly if you are not seeing the results first hand but this appears to be a remarkably cheap and effortless way to make a difference. And if it doesn’t deliver - what have you lost??
