Teen Gaming Experiences & Social Interaction

A new report released by Pew Internet (and covered in The Age), on Teens Video Games and Civics has concluded that virtually all American teens play games – computer, console, mobile – and that the gaming experience is rich and varied with a significant amount of social interaction. Using a survey distributed to 1,102 households to be answered by 12 – 17year olds and their parents researchers came up with the following statistics:

Fully 97% of (American) teens aged 12 – 17 play computer, web, portable or console games. Additionally:

  • 50% of teens played games “yesterday”
  • 86% of teens play on a console like the XBox, Playstation or Wii
  • 73% play games on a desktop or laptop computer
  • 60% use a portable gaming device like a PSP, Nintendo DS, or Gameboy
  • 40% use a mobile phone or handheld organiser to play games

Interestingly enough, there was a focus on the social aspect of gaming rather than the anti-social aspect (something I have noticed recently), noting that 65% of game-playing teens play with other people who are in the room with them, 27% play with people they connect with on-line and of the 82% who play games alone 71% also play with others.
