No Laughing Matter, a New World - Next Island
I am tracking approximately one major virtual world service/company appearing every two to three weeks at the moment. The latest kid on the block launching later this year is ‘Next Island‘ - “Live Your Fantasies in a Virtual World”. It is basically a social virtual world front end/element to one of the first SVWs, Entropia. But more interestingly as well as being hosted on the Entropia engine, from a content/genre perspective, it mirrors in its main town sq, a new New York laughter spot called Carolines Comedy Club. So on ‘Next Island’ a spot off the main hub will allow inhabitants to try their hand on the virtual open mike - ‘plug your computer mike in, we can’t hear you!’ - lets hope there are enough cool gestures to enhance the jokes.
The web site linked above is pretty weak, no sense of community or media from within world and lots of pages under construction which suggests this element of entropia is perhaps a little premature for a wider promotion - but I signed up to this one (received very little feedback) but bringing my total signups now to 56 worlds! Now where is the password list again?
Like several other worlds there is real money to be made here and they bizarelly list a large range of ‘jobs/roles’ to consider in their Careers Help Page. Even more odd there seems to be quite a few World of Warcraft type skills hidden on this page suggesting somewhat of a global game element within, turning it into a little bit of a social virtual world game hybrid. Jobs I particularly fancy might be:
- Biotropian – use Mindforce to Heal, charge hunts a fee for your services
- Humanoid investigator – Scan humans might be useful side skill
- Pet Handler – Train your Pets to do tricks and use them for advertising
and of course there are many traditional skills
- Mentor – Train Noobies and Be Rewarded when they Graduate
- Metal Engineer – Create Metal parts for all areas of manufacturing
- Tailor – Cloth the masses, become a Fashion industry icon

MarketWatch had a rather ‘in’ article covering this new Virtual World with a launch slated for Sep 22 at the aforementioned Comedy Club in New York and I quote:
