Searches for beauty and body treatments on yellow.com.au have spiked since 2001.
A Yellow directory spokesman says the figures not only reflect the general growth in the use of the internet but provide insights into social trends. “Even the way we exercise has changed,” he says. ”For example, Sydneysiders could have burned fat in 1980 by going to one of 18 rollerskating rinks in the city but now there are only two rollerskating rinks compared with approximately 127 gyms and 154 personal trainers.” Searches for personal trainers increased by 53% between 2005 and 2006 and dance tuition searches are up 41% to more than 140,000. Searches for weight-reducing treatments have increased by 42% since 2001 to more than 59,000.
