Girls and Gaming - Episode 1

I just bought myself a copy of Resident Evil 4 for PS2. Yeah yeah, old news I know but with work and uni commitments I don’t get much time to play games so I’m often lagging behind. Also, I have quite specific tastes so I don’t necessarily find all of the new titles all that appealing.
Recently, I have seen quite a few writings about the lack of girls in the gaming industry and the insufficient attention paid to the female gaming community. This topic is of particular interest to me and I intend to investigate it further as I disagree with many of the comments I have read from both sexes so far. It frustrates me to see female gamers pigeon-holed into this stereotype of only playing cutesy, frilly, sugar coated games with no violence…or SIMS. Personally I don’t like either of these types of games but then, I don’t seem to fit within the other guidelines for the “female gamers” category either.
I’m going to stop there as I need to do a bit more research before I unleash my complete rant  I will, however, share with you “The Top 10 Myths About Girl Gamers” by Mercurial because it made me giggle.
Over the next month or so it will be most intriguing to see the ratio of male to female applications we receive for the Games Design and Virtual Worlds courses running next year at AFTRS. We have not run these courses before so I am keen to see what kind of students they attract. I hope to see lots of ladies getting in there, taking the bull by the horns and making the changes they want in the industry.
The end. I’m off to kill some zombies ![]()
