Well, it was going to happen eventually, But I never thought it would be 2008..A small company from Yokne’am in Israel, called 3DV Systems has developed a unique patented technology which enables cameras to capture the depth dimension of objects in real time, high speed and very high resolution, using low or no CPU resources. The camera called ZCam, was at this years 2008 CES in Las Vegas. Apart from the fun applications of this technology, 3DV systems officials said the camera can also greatly enhance virtual worlds like Second Life. By capturing your image and integrating it with an avatar, users can fully interact in a virtual world. Because the camera doesn’t capture background images, users can also create their own backgrounds for their avatar

The ZCam will be available the second half of 2008 for a retail price below US$100
