BBC Cross-Reality Virtual Adventure Island
Childrens BBC have quietly launched a small creative virtual world Adventure Rock which is already reaching 2 million page views a month and has been downloaded 55,000 times. The back story is a compelling setup for the target audience who are encouraged to create movies, stories and take images of their travels.
“A short while ago, a strange rift appeared on the CBBC website, leading to an unknown world. A decision was made to send in two of our elite-Helpers to study the strange world beyond. This is the report they sent back from a world that holds more questions than answers…The Helpers found a strange tape in the depths of the CBBC archives. It seemed to be very old footage of the island, like some sort of travel show or advert. It appears the island was once meant to be some kind of holiday destination. Further investigation revealed that a long time ago, CBBC built a massive arena, codename: Adventure Rock. The Island was developed to play games, enjoy rides, discover new places and programmes, and create amazing videos, pictures, music and more. “Pages scattered around the island may hold some clues. However they are difficult to understand on their own. We need to get hold of as many pages as possible before we can figure out what’s going on. But someone, or something, is trying to stop you completing the book! “The crocs seem to be the only other life on the island. They will stop at nothing to keep you from getting the pages. Could the crocs know the secret behind why Adventure Rock was shut down? How long can we keep them at bay?!”
